Fullness of Joy

'You make known to me the path of life; in your presence there is fullness of joy', what a wonderful statement. Who doesn't want to know the secret of a 'joyful' life? Which of us wouldn't want to know the path to a life full of joy and pleasures for evermore?

The bible uses the metaphor of walking to represent our manner and direction of life. The old and new testament are filled with phrases such as; 'let us walk in the light of the Lord' , 'walk before God in the light of life', 'Blessed are those, ... who walk in the light of your presence' , 'walk in the light' .

In the verse above we are told that the Lord will make known to us the 'path of life'. The 'path' referred to here is not so much a road map showing the life choices we should make, nor a route planned out in advance, but rather a 'way to live'. We are instructed to live in His presence, that is, we are to live our lives in constant relationship with the Lord. When we do this, when we 'walk with God' as Enoch did, then we shall know joy in all its fullness.

We often think 'if only' this wasn't happening, 'if only' we could avoid that, then I would be 'happy'. However, if we are relying on our circumstances, or a change in them, to make us happy, then we will be waiting a long time! Joy does not come from the absence of troubles but rather from the presence of God in the midst of them. It is God Himself who brings joy.

How will you chose to live?

Will you spend your life pursuing happiness, seeking to avoid trouble and controlling your circumstances or will you spend your life pursuing a relationship with God, through all life's ups and downs? The former is like chasing the pot of gold at the end of the rainbow, the closer you get the further away its seems. God wants us to walk with Him, to enjoy His presence and we can do this by choosing to spend time with Him daily.

Lord, help me to walk with you, daily spending time in your presence through bible study, prayer and worship.
