When faced with troubles we tend to respond in one of two ways. We become a Griffon Vulture or an Ostrich!
A griffon vulture soars at 37,000 ft, higher than any other bird. When faced with troubles we can allow our imaginations to soar, high above reality, allowing our minds to dwell on the worst possible outcomes. Alternatively, we can behave like an ostrich and bury our head in the sand, ignoring what is happening around us.
Neither of these behaviours help us. Allowing our imagination to run wild will create fear and worry whilst ignoring what is in front of us and carrying on regardless is no more helpful. In both cases we are distracted from prayer and we miss the opportunity to trust God, to lean on him and depend on Him for strength.
So how should we respond to the troubles of life?
We need to become eagles. Isaiah 40:31 tells us what we are to do;
'those who hope in the LORD will renew their strength. They will soar on wings like eagles; they will run and not grow weary, they will walk and not be faint.'
We have to face our troubles and not hide from them, but exercise faith every day, and choose to trust in God, to 'place our hope' in Him. We must spend time everyday, reading His word and communicating with Him in prayer. When we do this we will soar, sometimes over our troubles, but more often through the middle of them, but always knowing that God is our 'fortress' and we 'shall not be shaken'.
Lord, help me not to fear or ignore what is happening around me but to place my trust in you each day.
